One study took some people and split them into two groups. Group one was to eat prunes or drink prune juice in the morning on an empty stomach every day for two months. Group two was supposed to drink water in the morning on an empty stomach, for the same amount of time. In the end, the people who drank the prune juice or ate prunes at the start of the day ended up with lower LDL cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol, and had lower overall cholesterol levels. To top it all off, the prune group even had lower blood pressure!
This makes prune juice and prunes, (which are actually just ‘dried plums’) look really good. Well it turns out they are really good! Plums are amazing for your health, dried or regular, and I want to dive in deep on how they are actually really good for your health!
You better grab a plum now, because I think these health benefits are gonna be so good, you’ll want to have a plum immediately on hand to snack on and reap those healthy benefits.
1.) Plums give the body vitamins!
Vitamin C is very important my friends. It helps with the body’s healing process and can even make it faster, and helps with getting over sicknesses. Plums have vitamin C in them along with a bit of other vitamins, such as bone and heart healthy vitamin K and eye-healthy vitamin A.
2.) Plums also have healthy minerals!
Plums supply the body with Folate. Not familiar with folate? Well, it works with vitamin C and B-12 to use proteins as well as make new protein. It also helps make red blood cells that are healthy. Some other minerals plums include are phosphorus and magnesium, and iron.
3.) Plums are bone healthy!
The calcium found in plums along with the vitamin K help your bones stay nice and strong!
4.) Plums are great for anxiety.
Plums, like all fruits and vegetables, are considered a superfood because of their antioxidants! Antioxidants kill bad substances called ‘free radicals’ that wish to do harm for the body! Anxiety is thought to be linked to lowered antioxidant condition, so raising your antioxidant count can help with anxiety.
5.) Plums protect the body
Antioxidants fight free radicals that hope to damage your cells. The antioxidants found in plums protect your cells from diseases like cancer, diabetes and alzheimer's. But plums are just one of many fruits and vegetables who can supply your body with antioxidants!
6.) Plums can make you full!
Fiber is a major factor in what keeps you full. Since plums have fiber, this makes them a great food for when dinner didn’t hit the spot and you want something to make you full. Or it makes a good treat just to snack on at times, since plums have low calories and are very healthy.
7.) Plums are great for weight loss!
Hasn’t this already been proved by the previous fact!? Since plums are low in calories but high in nutrition, this makes them a better snack than junk food. Plus, with the fiber found in plums, you’ll feel full once your body’s had enough!
8.) Plums are great for constipation
Yep, you read that right. Plums are great for constipation and also good for your bowels. Plums contain sorbitol, which is a natural laxative known to help prevent constipation. Prunes also are known to help relieve constipation. Plums also help the body release sodium through urine.
9.) Plums contain potassium
Enough said, because if you’ve ever looked into what potassium does for the body, you know it can get to work. But in case you haven’t, potassium is great for your heart, protecting it from heart-related diseases like heart-disease. Potassium can also reduce the risk of stroke and help manage high blood pressure.
10.) Plums are good for the eyes
Plums are good for your eyes and help prevent macular degeneration and other unwanted eye-related conditions.
11.) Plums help make blood!?
Now this one surprised me during my plum research spree. Plums have tons of Phytonutrients, which is basically plant nutrients, which are good for the body. Some Phytonutrients help prevent cell damage, while others help the immune system and hormones. Cryptoxanthin, one Phytonutrients found in human blood, is found in plums, so plums supply the body with something that is a part of your blood! How cool is that!?
If you stayed here this long, here are some reward honorary benefits that I couldn’t help but add into this article. Plums are good for your:
- skin
- arteries
- Brain
- Regulating cholesterol levels
- helping you gain healthy muscle mass
Gosh, just writing this article makes me wanna go out and buy more plums! But before you go, I wanted to let you know a few more facts about plums that may interest you.
Prunes are dried plums. Yes, they have the same health benefits as one another but prunes have much more sugar! While a cup of plums may have 16 grams of sugar in it, a cup of prunes has 66 grams of sugar packed in those wrinkly things, which is a BIG difference.
Also, plums aren’t just dark purple! They can come in shades of black, yellow, orange, red, and green too!
There are over 2,000 different varieties of plums, and sizes vary. They can be as tinee as a cherry to as huge as a baseball!
Do you have plums at home? Are you going to get some? What’s your favorite type? Write it in the comments! I love reading them!
