Sleep can simply be defined as a deeper form of rest. This is when your mind and body is replenished and freshened again. One secret of lions is that they sleep well. During sleep there is a lower consciousness of the happenings in your immediate environment and the relaxation of most of the muscles stimulated by the sense organs and skeletal system. While sleeping, brain activity is reduced thereby resulting in low Oxygen or energy consumption.
Below are some important benefits of a good sleeping habit:
1. A good and effective immune system: The immune system is that system that acts as the direct defenders of the body against invaders (germs). The immune system is made up of cells which are located in the white blood cell (lymphocyte). One important type of white blood cell is the T-cells and it is produced rapidly during sleep. A good sleeping habit equates to an efficient immune system- that is why doctors advice you to sleep when you are sick
2. A sound mental health: A good sleep helps ensure a clear head and a bright face. If you go a day or thereabout without sleep, you become easily agitated and you get depressed and frustrated easily. Sleep is a sure way of relieving anxiety and going about one's duty positively and diligently. Insomnia is a condition whereby one finds it difficult to sleep. A good sleeping habit relives your brain of the tress of coordinating the endless activities of the body and allows time for proper assimilation of information gathered thereby aiding retention of information and generation of ideas. Getting proper sleeps helps to maintain a proper attitude and puts you in a generally good mood. Adequate sleep is the best way to overcome a stressful day or to prepare for a stressful day.
3. It aids metabolism: Metabolism is the total chemical activity that occurs within a living organism to sustain life, metabolism involves the process of gaseous exchange with the environment to the repair of cells and every other complex or simple activity. While sleeping, metabolism takes place with ease as the body is in the right posture and energy is conserved and well available for the life process to continue in full force. Sleep helps in no small way to relax the walls of the blood vessels and ensure the circulation of blood at the appropriate pressure and quality.
4. It aids digestion: A good sleeping habit helps easy flow of food in the gastrointestinal tract thereby preventing lower or upper abdominal pain or indigestion. While sleeping, the microbial action needed for the breakdown of food particles is accelerated and subsequently absorbed through villi in the small intestine into the bloodstream. Sleep as you can see plays an important role in digestion or assimilation of food into the form useful for the proper functioning of the body. People who do not create a proper sleeping time end up suffering from all sorts of gastrointestinal infections which may result in the loss of productive time or even death.
5. It reduces the risk of heart related issues: A proper sleeping habit helps to regulate heart beat rate and also relieves the heart of excessive pressure which may lead to hypertension or high blood pressure. A proper sleeping routine ensures that vital organs like the heart are kept healthy at all times.
6. It helps to prevent fatigue: fatigue is a term used to describe an overall feeling of tiredness or lack of energy. It is not the same as simply feeling drowsy or sleepy. When you are fatigued, you have no motivation and no energy. Being sleepy may be a symptom of fatigue but it is not the same thing. When you do not have proper rest or sleep, you are prone to experience fatigue.
When you over work yourself, you are expected to get tired, all you will need to be re-energized is a good sleep, but when you deprive your body of that sleep, you tend to accumulate stress, which in the long wrong will lead to fatigue. When a person fails to rest well and fatigue sets in, it affects the overall productivity of the person; the person lacks the motivation and energy to go about their normal day-to-day activities.
