Hello Friends!
I am a die hard fan of Lebanese food. The other day, I was feeling like having pita pockets and went outside to buy Pita bread. To my surprize, 4 loafs of pita bread were being sold for INR 150. I was amazed at the audacity of the bakers to price pita bread so heavily.
For all those who are thinking why was I so surprised, that’s because pita bread is made exactly if the same dough as that of milk bread. And a normal milk bread pack is price at not more than INR 40.
So I just came running back from the shop, I couldn’t have paid 4x price for pita. And I decided to make it on my own. Anyways I had to prepare hummus at home, I thought why not pita bread too.
Hummus is a Lebanese paste made using boiled chickpeas and sesame seeds as main ingredients with a tint of garlic and lemon. It is dressed with olive oil and red chilli flakes. It is extremely delicious and healthy.
Pita bread is a circular milk bread. You can choose to make it with 100% wheat flour or 100% refined flour or a combination of both. I prefer a combination. It keeps it healthy and soft at the same time. If you like to have crunchy breads, then you can make these really thin but I wanted to make pita pockets, so I made them thick which gives them a hollowness.
And finally goes the vegetable filling. You can choose to add veggies of your choice. I added onion, capsicum and bell peppers. I missed adding cucumber, it gives a very nice and fresh flavour.
To prepare pita pockets, the pita bread is cut from the centre creating 2 pockets from 1 bread. Each pocket is filled with hummus and the veggies.
Although these didn't look like restaurant food, they for sure tasted the same. This is a very nutritious breakfast, yummy and comforting. Must try!
