Since antiquity, mountain ash has been loved and respected by many peoples. Our ancestors believed that she brings happiness, composed songs, legends and myths about her, protected her, and harvested berries. For Ukraine, the red mountain ash has long been a symbol of female youth, therefore, it is women that she primarily takes under her protection. Rowan fruits have traditionally been a part of a love potion that could overcome unrequited love. As a family amulet, the Ukrainians planted it near their homes and embroidered it on towels. Women and girls wore rowan beads strung on a red thread so that it protected from weakness, exhaustion, all kinds of disease and spoilage. Once upon a time for the same purpose and also to protect oneself from lightning, rowan branches cling to each door. In the folk calendar there is the day of the autumn Peter and Paul the fieldfare (September 23). They used to say that "from Peter's summer day, eat strawberries, and from autumn - rowan." People's omens about the weather predicted a long autumn, if rowan blooms late - autumn will be long. The abundant mountain ash turned red in advance - for a harsh and snowy winter, if there are few berries, then the autumn will pass almost without rain and wind. There are about a hundred species of mountain ash in total, but the most common is the common mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia) in question. The first frosts in late autumn is the time to pick red rowan berries, which in winter will delight you with delicious aromatic almond-flavored tea, help improve your health and simply decorate the room with dried branches with bright bunches. Since ancient times, people have known about the medicinal properties of this plant: herbalists have recommended mountain ash as a sedative and diuretic. Traditional medicine uses not only the fruits, but also the leaves, flowers and bark of the tree: an infusion of leaves - from sweating feet, bark and flowers - to treat the liver. Fresh rowan leaves have an antifungal effect, they are thoroughly rubbed, applied to the affected areas and bandaged. Eczema is also treated in this way. It is useful to drink a decoction of rowan flowers for coughs and colds.
