The Third Jerry Banfield Show – Health

What we will talk about today is how I went from being an obese alcoholic. I weighed 80 more pounds than I do right now. I could not stop drinking. I had a lot of other unhealthy habits to go with it, and mental illness. I was insane.

I will tell you how I've worked through all of that. I think this will be really helpful for being in recovery and it will be helpful to just go further too, instead of thinking, "Well, how do I feel a little bit better? How do I feel so good that I don't even know anybody that feels this good?"

I like a story that the CEO of Spanx told. She was doing this challenge, where they jump off a cliff with a bungee cord and they try and catch the person, get caught by the person on the other side.

Almost all the people with her who were men were failing. They would jump and they grabbed the guy's ankles or bumped into him, and fell off.

She was able to jump right into the guy's arms and she said, "I did it because when I got ready to jump off that cliff, I aimed to jump all the way up to the hook that was holding him. While I didn't get up to the hook, I got right into his arms and I was able to do what the men who were stronger than me couldn't do because I aimed higher than they did. They were just aiming at his chest or his waist. And when they missed a little bit below that, they just all fell off the cliff."

Sara Blakely, I think her name was, and that's what I'm doing with my health.

That's what I'm here to share as I'm aiming so high, I want no symptoms, no pain, no illness and I want no fear of symptoms or pain or illness.

I want incredible health all the time and not just that, but I want to be able to levitate, to teleport, to project my spirit out wherever I want to. I am learning these things now and that's where I'm at with what I can do, and the benefit of that is with aiming higher.

I mean, so what if I never get to levitate or teleport? I'm aiming to be so healthy that I can fully experience what this body is capable of.

Have you listened to Wayne Dyer before? I read some of his books. I've listened to a lot of Wayne Dyer's books and he said that he was able to get his butt off the ground and levitate during a meditation.

Now, if he can do it, there's no reason I can't do it too. I've listened to at least 30 of his live lectures and his thing was to get yourself so healthy that you have no symptoms, no pain, no illness.

When I heard that, I felt like, "Wow, why have I not heard that before? All I hear is when you have this symptom, go see your doctor."

As a matter of fact, it's more "Go see your doctor before you have any symptoms, just in case they can find something, and then diagnose a problem with it."

I heard a story in one of the books I read:

A man went to the doctor and they found a dark spot in his lungs. His doctor said, "Oh my God, this is cancer. Good thing we caught this." He was dead in six months. They found an old X-ray of his 20 years before, and the same dark spot was there. It only became a problem when he started thinking this was cancer and he started expecting that.

There's also the component of not feeling bad where you're at.

A lot of us, as soon as we start looking at what we could be like, "Oh my God, I can be free of pain. I can be free of symptoms. I can be free of illness. Well, I'm a really awful person being where I'm at. If that's possible, it's just horrible that this is where I'm at. I clearly don't deserve this."

We don't even try because it's like, "Well, if that's possible, why am I here?" and what I've found is what I've done and been through that's my motivation that I want to go there, that I've been 80 pounds overweight.

Meanwhile, I would go into the gym to work out and I used to do these really hard workouts being overweight. I'd go to the gym and I'd look at the body mass chart, and I'd see it was over there in the obese side.

I'd think, "I'm not fat. I'm strong, I'm muscular. I've got big bones. I'm not fat."

I'd tell myself this thing, and then I wouldn't believe it either. I'd feel like I was fat, but I'd rationalize, "Well, no, I'm not."

What I see is, as long as I was in denial, I wouldn't do anything about it. Then when I tried to do something about it, I quickly kind of relapsed. I did a diet. I remember I got a health coach once, and I did this diet.

I lost weight, but then I kept drinking, and when I get drunk, I'd say, "Screw this diet," and I'd get rid of it. I'd eat a whole large Papa John's pizza. I'd think the next day, "Now I'm hung over. I desperately need to feel better. Well, why even bother? Why even bother trying. Screw this diet!"

By the time I was done with the diet and a few months went by, I had more weight than I had before I started the diet, and I felt worse about myself.

I got to a place where I felt totally hopeless. My weight was out of control. I felt like I couldn't control what I ate. My alcoholism was out of control. I couldn't control what I drank.

I realized that because I tried to quit and I'd always change my mind. For me, the place to start with feeling better in health is to think about, "What's the one thing in my health I can do that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?"
