Ever since my head trauma, nearly two weeks ago I’ve been making a serious effort to pay attention to my health. That includes last weekend, when we went out drinking with friends and I held back.
Hitting my head was no biggie; but the dizziness, nausea and poor concentration afterwards, for 10 days or so, gave me a real scare.
Mundane tasks like reading, walking (forget bending down) required real effort and I got an early taste of what it feels like to be a dazed elder!
So, now I’ve cut out most of the junk food (sugar, fat, fried) and start my day with a protein rich, nutritious breakfast, like the one, below.
Thankfully, this is easy to do, in a Colombia — land of exotic fruits. With my daily fruit juice, I add chia (rich in omega). Beans are delicious, here, and with olive oil, cheese, onion and tomato remind me of Home: Egypt.
Also, I’ve gotten into the habit of having probiotic yogurt with nuts, fruit, and flax seed to heal my poor, rattled brain and build it back up, again.
In addition to focusing on anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables, I’ve been seeking out anti-oxidants— which means I’ve replaced my cherished morning coffee (Colombian, no less) for two cups of green tea throughout the day.
For lunch, I’ve cut out omnipresent white rice and replaced it with brown and I’ll, usually, have pulverized meat with it and, perhaps, a vegetable soup.
Before dinner, they tend to serve fruit, here — which helps give me energy for my evening walk. Lately, I’ve also been taking 10 flights of stairs, now, that I’m feeling a little better.
Waking up early, here, means going to bed earlier, too (between 9:30-10:30 pm). So dinner is around 7 pm and below is a handsome, robust specimen.
Not sure how long this goodness will last, but the ole bod needs a break and some TLC every now and then :)
