Losing your memory, physical abilities and cognitive abilities is the pits. The very sad heartbreaking fact is that over 40 million people worldwide are falling victim to these heartless diseases. The prime age group are older people in their 60's onwards. Unfortunately we can all boast of either knowing someone first hand or off someone whose friend's mother, grandfather etc. is sick with Alzheimers or Dementia. It must be so very hard for families watching a loved one slowly deteriorate in front of their eyes, the grief would never go away. The stories are heartbreaking for any listener and reader. While I am really aware of all the horrible facts I have always been hopeful that healthy eating and living habits is a strong iron clad preventative armour against these dreaded Alzheimers and Dementia diseases. Daily exercise, healthy nutritional eating, good health, good sleeping habits and the ongoing use of one's brain have to count for something. Perhaps, a naive perception to cling to! One that is full of hope nevertheless! So yesterday I was crushed to hear that well renown and highly prolific English author Terry Pratchett who certainly kept his cognitive skills honed, developed Alzheimers at 59 years old in December 2007. Terry Pratchett wrote the most incredibly clever books.

He was busily writing fantasy books when the diagnosis was made. Although his intent was to keep writing and continue being interactive with his fans I read that he deteriorated quickly, because ........ in early 2008, Pratchett revealed that by then he found it too difficult to write dedications when signing books.[52] In his later years Pratchett wrote by dictating to his assistant, Rob Wilkins, or by using speech recognition software.[53] [source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Pratchett) This case just reinforces very clearly that no-one is immune from these two diseases. And even though everyone is encouraged to be as pro-active as much as possible with health and lifestyle there is absolutely no guarantee you are not going to fall victim to Alzheimer or Dementia in your later adult life. I have lost some of my hopeful naivety. Terry Pratchett donated US$1,000.000 to the research on the cure and successful treatment of Alzheimers. I sincerely hope that sufficient funding worldwide continues to enable the medical and scientific world to find a breakthrough sooner than later. Cheers and Blessings
