The season have changed, the winter is coming here in the Southern Hemisphere, the days are short and the nights long.  It is cold and grey outside and suddenly you start feeling depressed and different.

You do not feel like socializing with your friends and staying in bed the whole time sounds like a much better option.

What is wrong with you?  Believe it or not, if you are a person who cannot handle the dark, cold and dreary days of winter, you are maybe suffering from something called "Seasonal affective disorder".

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year.  If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.  Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer.

Luckily most people snaps out of this feeling the moment summer returns.

Some people have no problem going through a winter and may even prefer winter over summer or feel they have more energy during the winter months.

If you are a person who suffers from 'SAD' there is a perfectly good explanation why you feel like this.   You do not have to stress about it too much, because when the summer comes you will feel yourself again.

Experts believe that is has to do with the amount of light your brain is exposed to and some people just need more in order to produce the correct amount of chemicals, so if your brain does not do this, it will mean that there is not a balance of chemicals and hence the depressed feeling you may experience.

You can read more about how light affects your brain and health here.

If you are suffering from 'SAD', you will see certain changes in how you normally act and how you know yourself.

You may experience a deep, sad feeling carrying on for a few weeks, you will start questioning yourself about everything and even feel that you are worthless.

You may experience a lot of mood swings and ups and downs.  A lot of times you will stop enjoying things that you normally do and you will have no desire to get out of the house.

You will feel low on energy and drained and even your sleeping patterns will change.  Sometimes you will struggle to sleep and other times your will feel you are not getting enough sleep and keeps feeling tired.

You may experience a lower level of concentration and struggle to get through a class and then lets not even mention the constant craving for food - the fattier and sugary the better.  Eating too much and all the wrong food is part of your daily routine.  Trying to comfort yourself leads to weight gain.

All of these things can make you feel depressed, confused, break down your self-esteem and just altogether not yourself.

You will know that you have 'seasonal affective disorder' if the same symptoms appears during the same time each year for 2 years in a row and the other times of the year you do not feel depressed or has to cope with a lot of mood changes.

The symptoms that you experience can be very mild which will not interfere a lot with your daily life or it can be very severe and crippling.

You can also be any age to be affected by this and it is estimated that almost 6 in every 100 people get a severe case of 'SAD' every year.

If you are someone that is being affected by this, what can you do about it to make you feel better?
