**We all walk.** But there are only fewer people who walk enough. There are many benefits of walking - *it builds muscle,* *protects and repairs body parts,* *aids digestion,* *keeps the brain fresh,* *prevents aging.* In addition to this, walking increases the creativity of human thoughts, keeps the mood good and also helps to reduce stress.

Neurologist Professor **Shane O'Mara** highlights some of the benefits of walking. He did research on the brain at Trinity College in Dublin. ### 1. The brain remains active Being inactive means losing muscle strength in the body. But bigger than that, it also causes the brain to dry up and death. Molecules formed in the muscles help to keep our brain active when we walk. A special molecule in it helps the blood to circulate in the brain. In this way, our brain cells develop. As a result, walking makes the brain stronger. ### 2. Heart stays good Walking is very beneficial for keeping the heart healthy. Our forefathers, who lived by hunting, walked 15 to 17 miles a day. *"Their hearts were really much better than people’s hearts today,"* said Shane O’Mara. In the jungles of South America there is a tribe called the **Tsimane** whose (a 70-year-old man) heart works like the heart of a 50-year-old American. This is because they are active all day long. ### 3. Helps in digestion Walking also acts as a friend for the human digestive system. *"People digest their food more when they walk a lot,"* said Shane. *"It's much better if you go out for a walk without taking medication to relieve constipation. It can help you get rid of digestive problems very easily."* ### 4. Helps to solve problems It is scientifically proven that walking increases our creativity. This makes it easier to solve many problems. *"When you are thinking about something, taking a little walk instead of sitting in one place frustrated; is very helpful in solving the problem."* *"We've learned from many great writers, philosophers and mathematicians how they've found solutions to many complex problems while walking."* An example is the novelist *Stephen King*. He goes out for regular walks and walks a lot. The philosopher and writer *Bertrand Russell* also used to write down many of his thoughts on a small piece of paper when he went out for a walk. And later he composed all the great articles using these method. ### 5. Helps to cut down on depression Neurologist **Shane O’Mara** says sitting without any work has a relation with depression. *"A recent study found that inactive people are more prone to depression. In other words, the more active you are, the better."* Depression is also thought to be caused by blood flow problems. *"If you walk a lot, if there are problems with blood flow, they decrease. It decreases dramatically,"* he said. In some cases walking works like a vaccine, helps to reduce depression. ### 6. Helps to be more open minded One theory is that each of us has a number of personality traits that are related to being active. Such as openness, being guided by conscience, being outgoing, agreeing to something, etc. Experiments have shown that people who are inactive tend to be less open-minded, less extroverted, and have more neurological problems. Conversely if you look at an active person you will see that these issues do not work very well among them. They do not get sick easily. ### 7. Helps in the metabolic process The food we eat is converted into different energy. Walking helps in this transformation process. Experiments have shown that staying active throughout the day, even in small doses, is much more beneficial than going to the gym and exercising. Many people find going to this gym too big. After spending the whole day in bed, they think that they will be healthy by doing gym for an hour. In fact, such exercises and habits can encourage people to be inactive. *"Because the body then says you have done your job, so you can sit down now, eat. Then the metabolic process actually slows down."* ### 8. Helps to keep the body intact There are many of us who have to work all day in chairs, sofas or in cars. This can lead to pain in the body, especially in the back. The human body is not made in a way that can stay in one position all day. It's too bad for you. Getting up from the chair and taking regular walks can relieve you from back pain. ------
