Oranges: a tangy fruit with lots of health benefits

Rich in vitamins C and calcium, orange is a fruit which is among the most liked fruit in my country and rest of the world. But, do you know, how many benefits are hidden in its peel? Not many people know about it. Because of its nice fragrance, orange peel is used to extract the scent to be used in foods. Orange zest is used as an ingredient for jam, cakes and tarts. There is a surprizing fact that peel of orange is the healthiest component of the whole fruit. But we are wasting it in trash! Goodness of orange peels In some of the researches it has been found that peel is that part of orange which is rich in nutrients more than the actual fruit. The particular smell of orange comes from its peel not the fruit. Doubt it? Peel an orange and then smell both; surely you would find that peel is rich in fragrance as compared to fruit. In addition, there are several nutrition found in its peel. It contains high amount of potassium, vitamin and calcium. Orange peel can be dried and/or used fresh as a dietary supplement. It can be replaced with potassium, magnesium, folate, vitamin A, B and C, calcium, and fiber. The fiber content in orange peel is high that help cleanse our stomach.

It Helps in preventing cancer It has been found that there is a protein named RLIP76, which is associated to cancer growth in body; this protein is inhibited by using orange with peel. Limonene, is another substance present in orange peel that may inhibit carcinogenic risks. It makes our lung healthy Congestion makes us feel uncomfortable specially during winter. Surprisingly, despite of being a citrus fruit, it is truly helpful in treating coughing, sore throat and congestion. Peels not only heals the congestion but also clean our lungs. Vitamin C is a natural immunity booster, which help in preventing lung infections.
