It is a chronic inflammatory condition of the eyelid margin. Blepharitis is one of the most common conditions affecting patients seen by ophthalmic practitioners. Though generally not sight-threatening, blepharitis can incite permanent eyelid margin ulcerations and visual loss as a result of superficial keratopathy, corneal neovascularization or ulceration can happen.

Based on duration we have acute blepharitis and chronic blepharitis and based on location we have anterior blepharitis and posterior blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis is an inflammation affecting the eye eyelid margin whilst posterior blepharitis involves the meibomian gland posterior to the lash margin.

Symptoms such as superficial discomfort, epiphora, conjunctival hyperemia which results in visual symptoms such as light sensitivity and blurred vision. Some signs and symptoms associated with blepharitis include crust or flakes on eyelashes, eyelids stuck together on awakening and reddening of the eyelids.

Infectious blepharitis may show greatest response to treatment with topical antibiotic ointment after lid hygiene. Some common antibiotics prescribed include erythromycin, bacitracin and others. The secondary causes of blepharitis requires that the underlying condition is treated, an example is seborrheic blepharitis where the underlying dermatological condition must be treated.
