Healthy Eating

The herd mentality eventually impacts us all in some way. Given my efforts to improve my fitness and health with a specific focus on my diet, I have started to explore alternative places to do shopping as I believe that being surrounded by people with similar interests could help while shopping. It has always been tough for me to go to the supermarket while trying to diet and limit my junk food intake just to pass by aisles of my favorite sweets (my weakness).

I went to Whole Foods to other day to try this experience and it was quite interesting as I learn how many common junk foods have been substituted my healthier options. Although I wonder if they are healthy in the end, it was a good way to see the possibility of transitioning from one to another. I still think that the problem is not one certain food in itself, but instead, the accumulation of having too much. In the end, many say that too much of anything is probably bad. It is sad how most times the worst food is the most addicting. Whether it be an ingredient, aggressive marketing or just manipulative tactics (yeah, let's put all the candy while we wait on line to pay), food is another vice that we can grow attached to overtime. Unfortunately, some can be just as bad as other products like alcohol and smoking products. Diabetes continually impacts a growing number of the population because of these practices that accumulate over years of poor eating habits. My experience in the Supermarket found myself reading the labels and wondering how much of a difference it all makes. The debates of organic versus inorganic and the whole dairy products issue has never been of importance to me but I wonder if it should. As I grow older, I think about how habits are tough to reverse and set a new course but it is often never too late to change. While I could never make a hard conversion to some of these new trends like vegan, organic, or others, I think that adding variety can help balance our health over time. Unfortunately, this experience and attempt to substitute towards "healthier" options is quite expensive. My shopping bill was almost double what I would do in a normal supermarket while not really adding anything new. Most were substitutes or organic products of what I already consume. This is concerning as while I am lucky to have the opportunity to make these purchases, it feels as though those with less resources cannot have the access to these healthier options. Given where I have been in my life, I think it is disappointing that it could be reserved to only a segment of the population. I am unsure if any of this will have significant changes in my health but I am willing to give a try as trying new things often motivate action. I have also always been resourceful which I think impacts me to strive to leverage my efforts to achieve something if I am spending resources on it. It is not worth spending money to eat healthy if I find myself eating at fast foods every day! Only time will tell although I can say that I have become a fan of a lot of these products.
