Every day after school the kids at OSHC get snacks to tide them over until dinner – just like they would if they were at home. First they get a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables to eat, then they get ‘afters’ which is different every day. Some of the ‘afters’ I prepare include: • Cheese, kabana, crackers and dip • Sandwiches • Soup (on a cold day) • Ice blocks (on a hot day) • Yoghurt • Slices (hot or cold, have lots of flavours/recipes to choose from) • Muffins or biscuits • Pinwheels • Mini pizzas • Pasta • Nachos And heaps more stuff….. A few weeks ago the kids were all about Super Heros (the next Marvel movie is about to be released) so we had a Super Hero themed week where we made up super hero characters for ourselves and chose what super powers we wanted. We brainstormed all the things that we believe makes a Super Hero and made cool super hero masks too! On the Friday we planned a special super hero menu which was pretty much all the normal healthy snacks we give the kids but this time we made little signs and put them with each food that told the kids the nutritional value of each food – but not in the way of what vitamins each food has, but as what that food does for your body…like, carrots give you good eye sight, broccoli gives you brain power, meat gives you strength… oh, and instead of saying the calcium in cheese is good for growth, we stuck pretzel sticks in cheese squares and called them “Thors Hammers”! It was fun and exciting and made the kids interested to try things they might otherwise not have tried (like raw broccoli!) We also made ‘Super Hero Sandwiches’ which were cheese or jam sandwiches cut out in the shape of bats (for Batman) and stars (for Captain America). I’d love to hear if you’ve had success with fun food activities for kids, or if you have any questions for me please feel free to ask 😊 Thanks for reading.
