##### There is no single average resting pulse rate for an adult. There is, however, an average range for normal resting pulse rates. The resting heart rate of an adult can be used in evaluating fitness level. A deviation from the normal heart range is usually an indication of a larger medical problem. The resting heart rate is also used by paramedics to determine if a person is alive or dead during emergency situations. THE AVERAGE ADULT RESTING PULSE RATE According to Mayoclinic.com, the normal resting heart rate for an adult male ranges from 60 beats to 100 beats per minutes, or bpm. Adults with lower resting heart rates are considered to be in better health. A resting heart rate below 75 bpm typically implies a more efficient cardiovascular fitness and good heart function. Adults with heart rates above 85 bpm are considered to be unfit. Well trained athletes can have resting heart rates as low as 40 beats per minute because of their fitness levels. FACTORS AFFECTING YOUR RESTING HEART RATE Your resting heart rate can be affected by a number of factors. Some of these include your fitness level, the temperature of your surroundings and your body position. Other factors are your body size, activity level, emotions and the medications you might be using. HOW TO MEASURE YOUR RESTING HEART RATE Place your middle and index finger by the side of your wrist or by your neck, whichever is more comfortable. Feel for your pulse. Calculate the number of beats that you feel over a 10-second period and multiply this number by six to determine your resting heart rate. If you have difficulties feeling your pulse, contact your physician immediately. A weakened pulse might be an indication that your arteries are blocked. SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS Contact your doctor if your resting heart rate is too high, which is above 100 beats -- or too low, which is below 60 beats. An abnormally high or low heart rate might be the indication of a larger disorder. An irregular heart rate can also lead to cardiac arrhythmia if left untreated. Common symptoms include chest pain, sweating, shortness of breath, fatigue or fainting spells. #####
