##### "Eat Right for Your Type" by Dr. Peter D'Adamo is a diet and weight-loss system that claims your blood type should determine which foods you eat, and which you should avoid. The science behind the diet is shaky at best, but following a reduced-calorie diet will result in weight loss for most people. Ensure adequate nutrition by eating a variety of foods and avoid fad diets that eliminate entire food groups, recommends the American Academy of Family Physicians. OVERVIEW The Blood Type Diet divides people into four categories: types O, A, B and AB. According to D'Adamo, each type has a specific tolerance for certain types of proteins called lectins. These lectins lead to hormonal reactions and can cause blood and tissue molecules to stick together. The diet claims that for optimal health, you must eat the proper type and number of lectins for your tolerance level. For each blood type, there are three food categories -- beneficial foods, neutral foods and harmful foods, as well as a list of foods that encourage weight loss. TYPE O Type O is the oldest blood type, according to the theory of the Blood Type Diet. People with type O blood, according to the philosophy, do well following a high-protein diet -- all animal proteins, fruits and vegetables are allowed, but dairy products, grains and legumes should be limited. To lose weight, people with type O blood should eat kale, spinach, broccoli, kelp, seafood, liver and red meat and avoid wheat and different types of cabbages. People with this blood type should exercise vigorously. TYPE A People with blood type A thrive on a vegetarian diet, says D'Adamo. Beneficial foods include soy protein, vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes and seafood. Avoid red meat and limit dairy foods and include plenty of healthy unsaturated vegetable oils in your diet. People with this blood type should engage in calming exercises such as yoga. Other tips for type A's include not skipping meals, eating more protein early in the day and lighter protein intake for dinner and establishing a consistent routine that includes going to be no later than 11 p.m. and rising early. TYPES B & AB If you have blood type B, you can follow an omnivorous diet -- eating both animal and vegetable proteins including dairy, with the exception of chicken, according to D'Adamp. Green vegetables, eggs, liver and tea are beneficial for weight loss, while wheat, peanuts and sesame seeds may slow weight loss. D'Adamo recommends meditation for relaxation for type B people and moderate exercise. People with type AB blood follow a combination of the type A and B diets; type AB is very rare, found in less than 5 percent of the population, says D'Adamo. #####
