Image by Alexas_Fotos from Pixabay A question was posed in @Abundance.tribe >What makes you believe one thing more than another? This question prompted another question for me - >Where do our beliefs come from? In a belief that is a firm conviction or acceptance, there must be some background context that is tied to that strong view coming from our awareness - something we see as truth. And is this truth as we know it or that is to the best of our knowledge, something that is working for us so we believe in it. Coming from our perception, is it what we perceive to be true. These truths as we know it can change and thus our beliefs can change. Something I want to differentiate on - belief and knowing. Knowing you have understanding and knowledge. Belief seems to lead to a truth, what we perceive to be true. True for us in our experience of life. >Why do we believe one thing more than another? Ignorance may come into play. A certain truth may be covered by our ignorance, we may not perceive a certain truth until it comes more into our awareness. And what of universal truths or ultimate truths? In our daily lives we use a conventional truth which is convenient for describing our experience in the outer, more concrete world, our reality expressed in words. Through the ages there has been teachers who have passed on their wisdoms, insights and truths. The Buddha through his meditation when he became enlightened, reflected on his experience of life, trying to penetrate its truth which could be conceived as an ultimate truth. He shared his understanding of the truths he found along with techniques of meditation. It is in meditation that you look more to the inner world of thoughts, feelings and perceptions. In meditation you can separate yourself from your thoughts and feelings and this allows you to become more aware, tune into your perceptions and gain more understanding of the true nature of your life. On doing this you may get to know yourself better. Then it would be easier to know how your beliefs developed and know if you want it to guide your actions. Going back to the original question of why you believe one thing more than another. In these Covid times where there is so much conflicting news and information I find I need to check in with myself and filter out information from people that I don't find reliable or trust. I try to be aware of the effects of what I am taking in and also look clearly at what is my actual reality. I am a person who takes good care of my health and will keep myself informed, especially if there is something that could endanger my health. I am careful where I get my information from, ensuring that they are reliable and a source I can trust. I take responsibility for my health and well being and would hope many others will too so we can be healthy and happy! May your reality be one of peace and happiness! psychology
