# Sensing a change in prediction Having taken psychedelic drugs for most of my life, I can really appreciate not just the euphoria but also calming properties of this class of drugs. However, I've never really understood or thought about how our brains shift between various states, and why these drugs prove to be so useful. Well, after reading the essay linked above, I'm a little bit wiser on that front. Our brains are essentially neural interfaces between physical sensory inputs and predictions. Kind of like "hit scanning" on an fps game. You can get better at predicting and as your brain "hardens", you get a positive feedback loop. However, the inputs in the real world are always likely to change, and thus we are in an ever state of re-calibration of errors. This can cause the brain to shift to states of suffering. How our brain re-calibrates dictates how we "predict" future events in response to sensory stimuli. This process is frequently activated during heightened energy states. For instance, during emotional or traumatic events. Typically, these "resets" leave people with some kind of post-trauma, emotional baggage or phobia. Not all high energy states need to be traumatic however, as we have come to find that other activities can also trigger resets without the detriment of suffering. Things like funky music, transcendent lovemaking and meditation. # Psychedelics to the rescue This all ties in with what we are beginning to learn about psychedelics and how they can vastly increase the energy state of the mind and therefore allow people to reset traumas as well as deal with stressors going forward. We are on the crux of forming a whole new theory on how minds function and together with psychedelics, powerful tools to help with recovery for when things go wrong. Once we learn how to properly use these tools, we can start helping people refactor their minds such that errors in mind configuration due to trauma can be mitigated or even completely reset. We might be able to radically improve emotional and mental health in a broad sweep within a generation. This bio-technology can help with mending the minds of a whole subset of people who are invariably handicapped to normal or productive function because of their cognitive stress. Perhaps for the first time in history, we can wave goodbye to mental health issues entirely. A world full of people who are mentally healthy would offer unlimited opportunity to be productive and creative, almost certainly bringing with it a surge in overall human progression. And what's more, we might be able to enjoy this mental oasis in as little as one generation. Hell may be other people, but so is heaven.
