As you may know (if you read my drivel), I've been making lots of wines, pate, and pickles over this last few weeks. Making my own bread is a daily (or bi daily) event. Now, unless you live under a rock or are very unaware of the wider issues going on in the world right now, tough times are coming. I may be wrong of course, but I'd prefer to be wrong and prepared, than totally screwed. We're lucky where we live as food grows in abundance, with fish, eggs and poultry readily available (relatively speaking). Living in the countryside comes with many benefits. That being said, and in relation to the hard times that are -a - comin', We decided a while back to make provisions for any hard times that may be headed our way. The easiest (and the most essential of course) are foodstuffs. But _how_ do you plan? KISS - Keep It Simple, Stoopid. It's actually pretty easy, once you put your mind to it. #### It's all about the calories. Yes, minerals and vitamins are kinda good to, but first and foremost - think calorific intake. We need between 1500 and 2,500 calories day, depending on activity - and temperature - which means it that can vary by quite some margins. So calculate accordingly for yourself and your situation - and environment. The rest is pretty much basic math. Calculate your daily intake and multiply it by the days you want to prepare for. Things like rice and pasta and flour are easy to work out, and dried staples are always a good idea to have stored. As I said earlier, minerals and vitamins (and other things) are also essential. While you'll survive on pasta , (if needs be), your health will eventually suffer though essential nutrient deprivation.
_But_ with a balanced intake nutrition from other sources, you can , and will, stay perfectly healthy. Staying 'all round' healthy is important. Not only does it mean that things like your immune system staying strong, but actual _thinking_ process are kept at the optimum. The _correct nutrition_ means that your decision making and planning are far more likely to be successful when your brain is receiving all the essential chemicals to keep the old synapses firing efficiently. If you don't give your organic computer the correct fuel , how can you expect it to work at it's best?..i.e 'fire on all cylinders'? And if the shit really _does_ hit the fan, this is the time when you _really_ want your brain to be firing on all cylinders. Pickling is a great way to think ahead in terms of calorific storage - and also to preserve all the the nutrients available in fresh veggies. (pickling locks in the minerals). I've calculated that my pickle carries around 150 calories per 100 grams. My jars vary in size, but on average, they work out at around 1,000 calories per container. That's a lot of very healthy calories. That's a lot of locked in, fresh veggie, nutrition. Add in a loaf of freshly baked bread and some cheese eggs, and meat, and you'll not only survive in hard times, you _will_ stay in pretty good shape to. 1000 calories a jar of pickles x 180 days = 180 jars. 500 calories in a loaf of my freshly baked bread, per day (x 180 days) is around 30 kg of flour. #### Throw in some minimal amounts of eggs, cheese, meat or fish, and that's _six months of food stuffs that will keep you healthy in a bad situation_. ..and it tastes _great_!
By preparing and storing _just these two basics food stuffs_, you are _miles ahead_ of 90% of people who will not be as well prepared. #### And if 'the shit _doesn't_ hit the fan? You'll have a larder full of maturing food, that lasts for years, (when properly sealed) and tastes _better and better_, as it ages. You also have a larder full of flour. Making a bet that can't lose onis a 'no brainer' in my opinion. #### Do you Hodl lots of crypto in cyberspace, but not stored up calories in your pantry? #### Is it a case of a 'no brainer'.... or is it 'no brain'?
