GERD stands for Gastro-esophageal reflux disease. When the acid content of the stomach goes up back to the oesophagus (gullet) and creates symptoms, it is called GERD. Today one patient came to me who had the features of GERD.  The most troubling symptoms he was suffering from were a burning sensation of the chest aka heartburn, and a feeling of tightness in his throat, after something coming back from his stomach into the throat. He also had frequent belching.  He tried different kinds of anti-acid drugs with mixed results; sometimes feeling better and another time worse, despite taking medicines. I took the proper medication history. I found out that he wasn’t taking the medicines regularly. Moreover, he had some other contributing factors, notably smoking and eating spicy/junk foods.  I prescribed a proton-pump inhibitor along with the antacid syrup. I asked him to quit smoking and avoid junk/spicy foods. --- # Take home message: * **GERD affects approximately 30% of the general population.** * **Occasional GERD is commonly seen in healthy people as well. But following reflux, certain in-built mechanisms come into action and neutralize the acid.** * **Long-standing GERD may present with some complications. Among those, the most feared one is Barrett's oesophagus. It is a premalignant condition.** * **In some patients, it needs a life-long treatment.**  --- Was able to make 10k steps 🚶‍♂️ before 10pm.
