According to the late Louis Pasteur (biologist, microbiologist, and chemist), wine is the most healthy and hygienic drink of the lot! Now, while Mr. Pasteur may have been making excuses to down an aged glass of fermented grapes, he wasn’t incorrect with his theories – a good old glass of vino does, in fact, have amazing healing properties. All in moderation, of course.
If you enjoy a good glass of vino, then you will know how that very first sip works miracles at making you relax and unwind as the cool liquid settles on your taste buds. What many of us do not realize, however, is that wine has other amazing benefits for our health and well-being. Especially red wine.
Getting to the juicy part – let’s look at the advantages of wine in detail:
1. It Reduces Stress
Popping open a bottle at the end of a long and tedious day is one way to settle our nerves as we reflect on the day’s happenings. It’s almost like a massage for the brain.
But what is it about wine that makes us relax almost instantly? According to some very clever scientists, it all comes down to something called “resveratrol”. Resveratrol is a compound found in wine that stimulates a “stress response” gene found in our DNA. When stimulation occurs then our cells go into “stress-fighting mode” and this helps to lower levels of depression, anxiety, and even perceived stress.
2. It’s Good for Your Heart
There’s a reason why wine connoisseurs have “grape” expectations for their favourite drink. Wine has proven to prevent/delay the onset of heart disease. Red wine contains tannins that are made composed of procyanidins. Procyanidins neutralize free radicals, thus helping to combat cardiovascular disease.
3. It Reduces Risks of Cancer
With the battle against cancer, wine may be on your side. A study by the Harvard Medical School gathered the following findings:
"Males who drink an average of 4-7 glasses of red wine a week are only 52% as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer as those who don’t.”
4. Longevity
If living a long and healthy is on your bucket list, then pop open that bottle of cabernet sauvignon.
Resveratrol (the same “guy” mentioned above) is a type of stilbenoid i.e. a natural phenol, and a phytoalexin. These to biological components are found in wine and studies show that they work magic at activating a protein has anti-aging functionality.
5. It Detoxes Your Body
Anti-oxidants are important because they attack harmful free radicals. Free radicals are the toxic by-products of oxygen metabolism and they can harm our cells and body tissue.
Drinking just an odd glass of wine can significantly boost your antioxidant intake and provide added protection against heart problems, eye problems, and even mood disorders.
6. It Adds A Sparkle to Your Eyes
Red wine continues to work its wonder and plays a role in preventing deterioration of the eye muscles. It does this by prohibiting the increase of blood vessels in our eyes and this helps to prevent macular degeneration or loss of eyesight altogether.
So, while obsessive drinking associates itself with poor eyesight, the odd Merlot could be more beneficial abstinence. #justsaying
7. It Keeps You Sane
For those of you who are still in your right mind, there’s a way you can keep your sanity in check for the long run. OK, so it on the alcohol will have the complete opposite effect, but if you drink modestly, then you can feed your brain (as opposed to frying it).
The anti-oxidants in red wine work at reducing the stickiness of blood platelets so that blood vessels stay open and remain flexible. This allows a continuous good flow of blood to the brain and reduces the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
8. It Makes for a Good Smile
Wine trigger endorphins. Endorphins or hormones that make us happy! Red wine and grape seed extracts are also useful when it comes to ridding teeth of bacteria that cause cavities and gingivitis. A glass of wine has the potential to stop these dangerous bacteria in their tracks whilst promoting dental health.
REMEMBER TO DRINK YOUR WINE IN MODERATION!
America’s Dietary Guidelines 2015 to 2020 define moderate drinking as follows: one glass of wine per day for women, and up to two glasses per day for men – this applies to adults over the legal drinking age.
