So often, I hear people talk about wanting to make healthy changes to their lifestyle, but they just don’t know where to start. I thought it would be fun to put together a little “Where to Start?” series to address this question. Today’s topic is WATER. Possibly the easiest, most talked about the healthy living tip, and yet it still goes overlooked! Drinking more water is a no-brainer when it comes to cleaning up your health. Just some many, many benefits include: - Banishing Hunger: That nagging feeling that you need a snack? There’s a good chance it’s just your body telling you that it needs more water! An easy test- if you feel hungry, drink a large (at least 8 oz) glass of water and wait 20 minutes. If you’re still hungry, have a healthy snack. But I bet you’ll find that you don’t need it! Drinking up before a meal also helps to fill you up so that you’re not consuming quite as much. - Increased Energy: Who doesn’t need that, right?! Drinking water helps you to focus and better concentrate on what you’re doing. It also helps to energize your muscles- cells that don’t have adequate fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which causes muscle fatigue. - Proper Bowel Function: Enough said. - Natural Headache Relief: Headaches are commonly caused by dehydration, and drinking up is the obvious remedy! Upping your H2O consumption is a great way to prevent headaches and migraines. - It’s Free: I’ve never heard anyone complain about their water consumption draining the bank account. Starbucks on the other hand…. Seriously, drinking water is a no brainer. If your spare change is burning a hole in your pocket, get yourself a nice tumbler or water bottle to carry around the good stuff. I keep it on my desk and try to grab my water bottle whenever I head out the door.

So now that we know the benefits, how can you get started on the path to proper hydration? 1.) Keep a water bottle or tumbler on your desk. I find myself reaching for it constantly, and fill up between 4-5 times per workday without thinking about it. If you’re having trouble making that happen, set a reminder on Outlook or an alert/alarm on your phone. 2.) Flavor! As you can tell from the photo above, my water is not crystal clear. I’m a HUGE lover of lemon water and keep bottles in the fridge at work and at home. You’ll rarely find me with plain old water (except right after a workout). If lemon doesn’t do it for you, try slices of cucumber, limes, or another fruit. 3.) Eat more fruits and vegetables! Both are high in water content and can add to your hydration. About 20% of our water intake actually comes from food! Do you have any tips for keeping hydrated?
