Replacement of the hip joint

The hip joint is made up of two parts: the head of the femur and the acetabulum. When the hip is healthy, the cartilage that covers the components is smooth, soft and allows for painless movement. When this joint becomes diseased, the cartilage deteriorates and the patient begins to feel pain, stiffness and functional limitation, decreasing the quality of life. Different diseases produce this joint deterioration, the most frequent being arthrosis, necrosis of the femoral head, rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylopoyetic spondylitis, fractures of the femoral neck, etc. Total hip replacement is the replacement of the hip joint, which has suffered significant wear, for any of these reasons, by a prosthesis.

Benefits of intervention

This prosthesis will allow the normal functioning of the hip to be restored, eliminating the intense pain suffered by these patients both while walking and at rest. In this way, the patient will be able to recover the lost quality of life and walk normally again. Hip arthroplasty has not only become one of the procedures with the highest success rate and which continues to improve thanks to the contributions of numerous researchers, but also during the last decade new loading materials, designs and hip surface arthroplasties have been applied especially quickly. The success of the surgery will necessarily depend on the patient exercising, taking into account the recommended precautions for his hip, without forgetting to have a healthy lifestyle.
