People always say healthy food is so expensive when water is the healthiest and cheapest to attain.

Saw a popular meme criticizing the food system showing the price of a McDonalds burger and a large salad.

The single cheeseburger=$1
Salad=$12

I’ve seen this photo online for years and never felt it was a very well thought statement, so wanted to do some fast research.

First thing was just looking at the price of salads at McDonalds and searching a website monitoring prices and national average.

McDonalds offers three salads at most locations in different sizes, but for most large.

Caesar Salad-$5.39
Southwest Salad-$4.79
Bacon Ranch Salad-$4.59

Looked at prices and the only times McDonalds will sell a salad over $10 is at places such as the Times Square location, where everything is expensive.

Comparing the salad prices versus a $1 cheeseburger, it is still noticeably more expensive, but it’s also a lot more food.

A dollar menu burger patty only weighs 1.6 ounces or 10% of a pound.
7.3 ounces including bun and toppings.
The salads have mixed weights, but found online a site saying they Caesar salad weighed 12.5 ounces.

Purchasing a single burger at McDonalds is paying $0.62 per ounce on meat.
$0.11 per ounce in total weight.
The salad which is a lot more food is paying $0.43 an ounce.

On a weight basis, salad is cheaper for the amount of food given.

Next up, places besides McDonalds.

I wanted to look at chain restaurants that aren’t fast food and designed for more of a sit down experience.

Fridays
Cheeseburger-$11.09
Side salad-$5.19
Full chicken salad-$11.59

Ruby Tuesday’s
Classic Burger-$13.19
Side Salad-$6.19
Salad-$16.19

Two major chains and they offer a salad without meat at a low price and another salad with grilled chicken at comparable prices to a burger. Also again, more food, bigger portion and more difficult to prepare item.

Going back to the photo mentioned, this is another example of the goal to create a fast reaction and not have people think for over 15 seconds.

The McDonalds which sell salads aren’t $12 and on a weight basis are cheaper.
Every major chain restaurant has salad sold at comparable prices to burgers or fries.
They also ignore the fact salads have more labor to prepare them and often way more food.

Another example of something stupid found online.
