Maybe when you saw this publication you thought it was a joke, maybe the title made you curious. However, it is a serious issue that affects our health and invites us to be alert.
The advancement of technology has made it possible for many of our activities to change radically. At present, making purchases, paying for services, even earning a living, is possible through an internet connection; however, this has brought as a consequence, in part of the population, a sedentary life, harmful to health, promoting diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and cardiovascular problems, as well as complications like the one we are going to treat today: the "Dead Butt Syndrome", also known as "Gluteal Amnesia".
The muscles of the gluteal area are of great importance because they work constantly to maintain a balance that allows us to walk properly and avoid problems in the waist, back and up to the ankles. This syndrome originates when the gluteus medius, one of the three main muscles in this area, stops functioning correctly, atrophy and loses strength, becomes inflamed and forgets to function normally.

The gluteus medius is a thick, wide muscle located on the outer surface of the pelvis. Weakness of this muscle can occur when you spend many hours or prolonged time sitting in a chair. As indicated by the function of this muscle, **Gluteal Amnesia** can cause pain in the lower back and hip; it can also cause problems in the knee and ankle, as the body tries to compensate for the imbalance

However, although prolonged sitting is profiled as the leading cause of this condition, Kristen Schuyten, who is a physical therapist at Michigan Medical Center, warns that it can also occur in active individuals who don't work their buttock muscles properly. The therapist explains that when the buttocks stop working properly, either because of inactivity and lack of stimuli, causes tension in other muscles and joints, causing weaker muscles to perform the work of the buttocks

What are the symptoms?

-Severe pain affecting the lower back. -Discomfort at hip level -Discomfort in the knee joints -Pain in the ankles.
These symptoms are usually associated with another type of disease which causes a separate treatment, ignoring, in many cases, that it is a "Gluteal Amnesia" or the so-called "Dead Butt Syndrome".

How is gluteal amnesia detected?

To diagnose this disease you can perform this easy and simple exercise yourself, even before going to the doctor, called the "Trendelenburg" test:
  • While standing, lift one leg, extending it forward.
  • You have to be aware of any change by touching the pelvis on the side of the body where the leg was lifted.
  • Do the same procedure with the opposite leg.
If during the exercise you noticed that there was a sinking of the side of the body where the leg was lifted, then it represents that the muscle is atrophied on the opposite side. It is important to add that this condition can also generate a pronounced curvature of the back and cause severe pain in the lumbar region.

How to prevent "Amnesia Gluteal" or "Dead Butt Syndrome"?

As mentioned earlier, one of the causes of this disorder is a sedentary lifestyle; however, there are cases in which people who are very active do not work this muscle enough. Some important suggestions that can help to avoid this disease are the following:
-Do a brief routine a day: Spend a few minutes doing squats or exercises aimed at strengthening the buttocks
-If your work forces you to sit at a desk, try to stand up from time to time, walk around it a little.
-The massages will help you a lot, so stimulate those buttocks at night, or tell that special person to do it for you, for this you can apply special products for the muscles.
As mentioned at the beginning of this publication, it is normal today to spend much of the day sitting with our cell phones or in front of the computer; likewise, having to go by car or public transportation somewhere rather than walking is also common. However, it is important to consider a daily routine (even a few minutes) working all areas of our body. This, without a doubt, will be fundamental for a healthy life. Even if we spend much of our time in front of a desk at work, investing in our body and well-being will never be a waste, so win the battle with "Dead Tail" and turn it around.
