It is commonplace for people to buy pure honey from honey farms, organic stores and markets rather than the commercial honey on shelves in supermarkets. This is because honey is extolled as a food that is both natural and extremely good. The general thinking is that honey has many health benefits. The benefits of honey is often passed on by word of mouth from one generation to the next. Like I remember my mother saying that honey is a better healthier substitute to sugar for cups of tea. Another bit of her advice that has stayed with me is the drinking of a hot honey and lemon in water when sick with a cold, as it was known to suppress coughing and sooth sore throats. Honey is a natural medicine. But mothers are told not to give honey to babies under the age of one as it there is a chance of little ones developing botulism. I have also been well aware of the healing attributes to honey, people would take honey to help heal stomach ulcers as well as placing honey on burns, wounds and ulcers on arms and legs etc. In addition there have been several studies showing that while honey is high in calories and raises blood sugar levels it is shown to have antioxidants that are good for reducing blood pressure and better for diabetics. Of course, in the end it is up to individuals to choose whether honey is right for them or not. Or even if they like the taste of honey! It is very sweet. I am a lover of honey and during my recent trip to Tasmania I visited the very successful **Blue Hills Honey** situated at the northern end of country near a town called Stanley. It was a thoroughly enjoyable outing. The honeybees in this area collected the nectar from the flowers of the rare Leatherwood trees found in this area. The company has been operating successfully for 50 years. They export to many countries in the world. Some interesting facts that I learned was that the Queen bee lays 2000 eggs a day and the worker bees start working from the day they emerge until they dies from exhaustion which is 6 weeks in the active season and 4 months in the quieter times. A positive for bees. Although there are threats to beehives in the form of mites, pests like bears, mice and other bee colonies, beekeepers have ways to protect and keep their bees safe and sound in the beehives. This is definitely heartening news for the honey eater. Honey bees play a very important role in the environment pollinating as they fly from flower to flower. The world needs honeybees. Cheers and blessings
