Packing a healthy lunch box

You cannot wait for the bell to ring so that you can take a break and have something to eat.  You are tired and hungry.

But what will you eat?  You have the control to choose if you will buy something at the cafeteria (and will it be food or just sweets) or do you have a lunch box and what is in it?

Even if your mom has packed the most delicious lunch, it is still your choice if you will eat it or throw it out, so it is important to know why it is good for you to choose the healthy option.

The reason why it is a good idea to eat healthy is easy to understand - it gives you energy to get through the day and it keeps you healthy.  Even if it sounds fun to rather stay in bed, not going to school, you will miss a lot of work and it is no fun being sick or catching up on the work again.

If you choose to only eat sweets and drink cold drink, it will not give you enough energy to get through the day. Your body needs the right kind of 'fuel' (just like a car) to operate at its best.  

If you decide to rather buy your food than pack a lunch box, you can still make a healthy decision.  Look at the options you have and you can even plan your menu for the week that you know what to buy.  Packing a lunch box is also fine, but it is still your decision what you will pack in it.

It does not mean that you may not have anything nice like chips or sweets, it just means you can not only eat that every single day.  You need to at least have a fruit and some healthy snacks that will give you the necessary energy and keep you healthy.

There are a few guidelines that you can follow to make sure you have a healthy lunch.

  • Make sure you add at least one fruit or type of vegetable to your lunch box
  • Do not eat foods that are very high in fat every day - it is nice to have a hot dog or hamburger every now and then, but try and limit it to not more that twice a week or if you eat it everyday, try and limit how much you eat.  We need fat in our diet, but rather get it through eating something like nuts.
  • What you drink is also important and having a fizzy cold drink every day is not good.  It is loaded with sugar, so rather stick to good old water or milk.
  • Try and eat a variety of food every day.  Besides from not getting bored with the food, you will also make sure that you get the different nutrients and vitamins that you need.
  • We usually eat very fast during break, so we can easily over eat.   Try and slow down and stop eating if you feel full.

Besides from trying to eat healthy, also remember that you have manners. So do not try and be funny in front of your friends and eat like a pig.  Chew slowly and with your mouth close.

You are big enough now to decide for yourself what you would like to eat and also to pack your own lunch box.  So surprise your mom and tell her you will be doing it from now on by yourself. You can do it the evening before and it will also help her.  

Decide what you would like and make a list of what you need.  After your mom has bought it you can go ahead and make sure you have a healthy lunch box (you can even add a nice treat).
