Kick Ass Fire Cider Hot Sauce

https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/riverflows/1QTfZyQ3-image.png
It's fire cider bottling time!! Every time winter starts to peek her head around the corner of Autumn, I panic and make as much fire cider as I can, but still think I haven't made enough. Haven't heard of fire cider? It's basically apple cider infused with everything medicinal you have to hand - lots of garlic, onion, ginger, turmeric, pepper, rosemary, parsley, lemon, mustard seeds - and honey, although I don't bother with that for my fire cider shots because I'm hardcore, as you know. I probably *should*, as it's an extra medicinal ingredient!

It's a tonic that both helps prevents colds and reduces their duration, as well as having a heap of other benefits. Horseradish and chilli will clear your sinuses. Ginger is a great digestive aid and helps fight infection. Garlic is antimicrobial and antibacterial, fighting infection too as well as lowering cholesterol. Cayenne pepper is good for the immune and circulatory systems. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory. Honey is an excellent antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory heal all. Just consider the health benefits of *half* the things in a fire cider and you have yourself an awesome tonic, used from kitchen ingredients, at a fraction from what it'd cost to buy at the store. I have written about fire cider before, but it's really as simple as putting all the medicinal herbs and plants you can think of in a jar and cover with apple cider vinegar, letting sit for about 6 to 8 weeks then straining! If you've written a post about it to, drop your link below - I'd love to see your recipes - perhaps better ones than mine, which is traditionally slap it together without measure or care! # Kick Ass Fire Cider Hot Sauce Squeeze as much ACV from the strained fire cider ingredients as possibly. Simply remove the ingredients you think might be a bit weird in there (i.e chunks of lemon and rosemary) and whizz in a blender with a dash of lemon juice to help liquify and some raw honey. I used manuka honey for this one.

I made a delicious sweet and sour tofu with black rice by marinating tofu with this hot sauce, then frying the tofu up and adding a bit more honey to taste. I served it with black rice sauteed with kale, spring onions and tamari. The sore throat that was niggling at my man all day had disappeared by the morning - it was either man flu or this is really kick ass hot sauce. # Have you made fire cider before? # What do you do to ease a cold, or prevent one?

***The @ecotrain and @naturalmedicine 'Alternative Consumer Challenge' will be announced on SUNDAY AEST - look out for it under @naturalmedicine blog. We're teaming up for this one, awarding Steemians to write about making and creating alternatives to those things we're tricked into buying, when really making our own is soooo much better for our health, and the planet. Less packaging, less chemicals, less ethical quagmires. Like this hot sauce recipe, which is also a great natural medicine. Now, you're not going to find those healthy ingredients in a store bought hot sauce, are you? Mainly tons of sugar, and probably palm oil from a plantation killing orangutans in Borneo. We are looking for alternative 'products' that don't cost our health or the earth. Start thinking about your entries, tagging them #naturalmedicine and #ecotrain - there's 50 Steem of prizes on offer!***
