##### Natural food coloring is derived from plant sources and can be used to color cake frosting or tint cookie or cake batter. If you prefer to avoid artificial food coloring, these natural colorants offer an alternative. Concentrated forms of red cabbage, beet powder and turmeric create the basic red, yellow and blue required to create a wide range of colors. TURMERIC Turmeric is used to create a warm golden or yellow color. Natural yellow liquid food coloring contains glycerin, deionized water, turmeric and sodium hydroxide. Turmeric is considered safe for most adults, even when taken as a supplement rather than used as a food coloring or spice. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, turmeric may have some anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric should not be taken as a dietary supplement if you have gallbladder disease but may be used as a spice or coloring. RED CABBAGE Natural blue food coloring relies upon red cabbage as a colorant. The remaining ingredients include glycerin and deionized water. While fresh red cabbage is an excellent source of potassium and fiber, as a colorant, red cabbage has no significant benefits and poses no concerns. BEETS Dried and powdered beets or beet juice create a magenta-red food coloring. While large quantities of beet powder or juice contain substantial amounts of folate, potassium and vitamin C, the small amounts used in food coloring add no measurable vitamins or minerals to your food. The ingredients in natural red food coloring include beet juice and citric acid. CHOOSING NATURAL FOOD COLORING Natural food coloring is substantially more expensive than artificial food coloring and produces softer, more muted colors. While the Food and Drug Administration has not found definitive evidence that artificial food colorings cause health issues or hyperactivity in children, some parents opt to avoid these petroleum-based colorants. Natural alternatives can create playful and colorful treats without the chemicals. #####
