##### Today’s subject is all about salt and weight loss, and was sparked by a recent video I caught online that suggested you could lose 5 pounds in a week by eliminating salt from your diet. So is that really true? Well, yes it could be possible to lose 5 pounds, or even more in a week if you eliminated all salty foods from your diet. But I should be clear here – we’re talking about water weight loss, not fat loss. And the reason for losing such a large amount of weight is simple – with nearly no added table salt in your diet, your body will hold less water. Your kidneys regulate how much water is in your system depending on how much salt you take in, so if you adopt a low salt diet, less water is needed to balance things out so you’ll shed excess water weight. At the same time – in order to cut your sodium intake you’ll have to give up most junky, high-fat foods. Which means that you’ll also be taking in considerably less carbohydrates and sugars, which will also help you shed water weight. Plus of course if you stick with a low salt diet, you’ll likely be eating a lot of lower calorie foods, which will also help you lose weight! That’s why people who use the Atkins or High Protein diet drop double-digit pounds in the first week. They take in nearly no salt or carbohydrates, but probably 75% of the weight they lose is water! Not the result you really want! I know, it sounds crazy that you could actually lose that much weight in a week, just due to water. But let’s remember that your body consists of up to 60% water, so if you’re an average sized man or woman, that could represent anywhere from 75 – 100 pounds of just water! And while obese people tend to have a lower total percentage of water (around 50%), the numbers are still startling – a 300 pound individual can be carrying as much as 150 pounds of the clear stuff. That’s just crazy. So you can see, losing 10 or 15 pounds of water is actually quite easy, and only represents about 10% of your water mass. Bodybuilders have long learned to trick their bodies into shedding water to shrink-wrap their muscles with thin skin for competition. I’ve done it, and have lost 9 pounds in a 24 hour period the day before competition. With less salt in your diet, your skin appears “dryer” and thinner, revealing vascularity and muscular striations. However I’ll tell you first hand the rebound effect is terrible. Anytime your body is in a deprived state, it becomes super sensitized to whatever it is you’re lacking. So when normal salt consumption resumes, you suck up water like a sponge – literally. I’ve gained 20 pounds in 7 days following a bodybuilding show – all water! I also need to clarify the difference between sodium and salt. A lot of you may be under the impression that they’re the same, but they’re not. Sodium is found in foods and is naturally occurring, and truthfully you couldn’t have a sodium free diet. Virtually every food has sodium in some amount. What we’re taking about here is table salt or sodium chloride, which we use to preserve and enhance taste, and prolong shelf life. The average American diet is terribly high in salt, due to our junk food obsession, and consequently we are a nation plagued with high blood pressure. The recommended daily allowance is only 2,300 mg, and yet some fast food or restaurant meals can contain up to 4,000 mg! That’s just in one meal! With a high salt diet, your blood becomes ‘thicker’ from excess water in the system, which makes you look puffy. That’s the reason why it’s hard to get your rings off the day after a high salt meal! Okay, so let’s cut to the chase. Should you try a low salt diet? Absolutely! But choose it as a lifestyle – not as a tool to look thin for a family reunion. Low salt diets will help keep your blood pressure normal, reduce associated cardiovascular risks, and truthfully just keep your entire system running smoothly. But remember, a healthy lifestyle is a life long endeavor, not a one-week quick fix. Be realistic, be consistent, and succeed! #####
